Due to the distance between dive sites and the fact that by far the two best dive site in Galapagos (Darwin and Wolf) are only accessible by live-aboard, Dive Galapagos rcommends that divers who have the time and money opt for a live-aboard trip that goes to Darwin and Wolf.  There is no place on the planet where divers can experience the sheer volume and variety of large marine organisms like they can at Darwin and Wolf.

 

However we also understand that due to logistical reasons, sometime this is not possible and there is some remarkably good diving in the central islands where divers can experience unforgettable dives with hammerheads, Galapagos and white-tipped reef sharks, turtles, moray eels, numerous species of rays and seahorses.  These excellent sites are reached by a short boat trip from the islands of Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal where there are a number of hotels available.

 

Recent changes in Galapagos National Park rules have given the local dive operators exclusive use of dive sites which are close to towns  (i.e. these sites are no longer available to the live-aboards).   For example, Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) off the west coast of San Cristobal Island and Gordon Rocks off the east coast of Santa Cruz Island can no longer be visited by live-aboard vessels.  This has resulted in the emergence of numerous land based operations.   There are dozens of “operators” offering tours out of store fronts for both diving and land tours. Many of these offer last minute deals and interesting tours to sites close and far, but visitors have no way of knowing whether they are a legitimate and safe businesses.  

 

Things change quickly and often in Galapagos which is why it is important to use the services of an experienced operator such as Galapagos Adventures when booking your tour.
